Terms of Use

Last updated . These terms cover your use of the HTML Code Viewer website and its tools.

Accepting these terms

HTML Code Viewer is run by Jurgen Pine (“I”, “me”; see About). By using the site you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use it. The privacy policy explains how data is handled and is part of these terms.

What the service does

The site lets you type, paste or open HTML and see it render in a sandboxed preview, with the page’s console output, a list of markup problems, an element picker that jumps from the preview to the matching line, and a Page info summary. You can preview at the panel width or at 390, 768 or 1280 pixels, format the code with Prettier, minify it, copy or download it, share it as a link, open it in a new tab, start from one of 12 examples, or load the HTML source of a public web page with Load source.

The service is free. It is provided as a tool for viewing and checking HTML, not as a hosting service: I don’t store your code for you.

Rendering differences

The viewer is a convenience tool, not professional advice or a guarantee that your code is correct, accessible or secure. The preview is drawn by the browser you are using. I work to make it match what that browser shows for the same file, but I can’t promise that it matches every place your HTML will end up. In particular:

The Problems list is a set of checks for common markup mistakes. It is not a full HTML validator, and a page with no problems listed can still have errors. Format and Minify are written to keep how the page looks, but you should check the result before you publish it. Both can be undone with Ctrl+Z (⌘Z on a Mac).

Code you run and open

You are responsible for the code you put into the viewer and for what it does. The preview runs scripts, so code you paste, open from a file, load from another site or receive in a share link will run in the sandboxed frame in your browser. The sandbox keeps that code away from this site’s pages and storage, but the code can still show content, make network requests, open pop-ups and load files from other servers. Only run code you are willing to run. If you aren’t sure about a file someone sent you, switch Live off first: with Live off, a newly opened file or share link waits until you press Run.

Files you download are saved as written in the editor, in UTF-8. An opened file you haven’t edited is saved unchanged, and if an edited page’s meta tag names another encoding, the viewer changes it to utf-8 so the text displays correctly. Check them before opening them elsewhere, especially if the code came from someone else.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

A note for everyone who opens share links: a previewed page can look like any website, including a bank or an email login. Never enter passwords, card numbers or other private details into a page shown in the preview from a link someone sent you.

A share link contains your code, compressed, after the # sign. It is not stored on my server, so I can’t edit, revoke or delete a link once it exists. Anyone who has the link can read the code, and the link lasts wherever it is pasted, including chat apps and browser history. Don’t put passwords, keys or personal data in code you share. Very long code won’t fit in a link; the viewer tells you when that happens, and you can download the file instead.

You are responsible for the code in links you create and for where you send them. Because I never receive share links, I don’t review their content.

Feedback

If you send feedback, such as a bug report or a suggestion, you allow me to use it to improve the site without any obligation to you, and you confirm that the message doesn’t contain anything you aren’t allowed to share. Please don’t include passwords, keys or other sensitive information in it.

Who owns what

You own the code you write or bring to the viewer, along with whatever rights you already had in it. Using the site doesn’t give me any rights to your code, and I don’t receive it except as the privacy policy describes.

The 12 examples in the viewer may be copied, changed and used for any purpose, without credit. The site’s own design, text and program code belong to the person who runs it and may not be copied as a whole to make another site. Short quotes with a link back are fine.

Third-party content and links

Pages loaded with Load source, code in share links and files that previewed HTML loads from other servers belong to their owners. I don’t check, endorse or take responsibility for that content, and loading a page’s source doesn’t give you any right to reuse it. Respect the owner’s copyright and terms. Links to other websites are provided for convenience, and those sites have their own terms and policies.

Availability and changes

I aim to keep the site running, but it may be slow, unavailable or changed at any time, for maintenance or for reasons outside my control. Load source depends on the target site answering in time and may be refused by some sites. I may add, change or remove features, including limits such as the 5 MB cap and 12-second timeout for Load source or the 10 MB limit for opening files.

Disclaimer

The site is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement, to the extent the law allows. I don’t promise that the preview, the Problems list, Format, Minify or any other feature will be free of errors or suitable for your use. Keep your own copies of anything important: the saved draft lives only in your browser and can be lost if browser data is cleared.

Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, I am not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for loss of data, profits, business or reputation, arising from your use of the site or from not being able to use it. That includes loss caused by code you ran in the preview, by a page that rendered differently somewhere else, or by a share link that reached people you didn’t intend. Because the service is free, I accept no liability for any claim relating to the site, except where the law doesn’t allow that limit.

Your consumer rights

Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer protection laws that can’t be excluded by agreement, or liability that the law doesn’t allow to be limited, such as liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

Suspension and termination

You can stop using the site at any time. I may block or limit access, for example to Load source, for anyone who breaks these terms or puts the site or other people at risk. The sections on ownership, feedback, the disclaimer and limitation of liability continue to apply after you stop using the site.

General

If any part of these terms is found to be unenforceable, the rest still applies. If I don’t enforce a term straight away, that doesn’t mean I have given up the right to enforce it later. These terms and the privacy policy are the whole agreement between you and me about the site.

Changes to these terms

I may update these terms as the site changes. The date at the top shows the latest version. If you keep using the site after a change, the new terms apply from then on.
